The film centers around Max (voiced by Patton Oswalt), a terrier who lives with his owner Katie (voiced by Jenny Slate). Max's life is turned upside down when Katie adopts a new dog, Duke (voiced by Eric Stonestreet), a mischievous bulldog. The two dogs become unlikely friends, but their adventure takes a wild turn when they get lost in New York City.
